Why are the Ingredient Names so Long??

According to government labeling rules, all ingredients must be written with their International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) name. Why? Because they are recognized around the world and we do not to have multiple names for one ingredient. It is also for public safety to identify what is safe to use and what is not in one global language. Makes sense, right?

Here are the ingredients from the package of our lotion bar.

Ewww, looks like tons of chemicals (we will save the chemical debate for another blog).

Here is the breakdown:

Beeswax- Self explanatory. We use this to harden up the bar so it does not fall to mush in your hands.

Mangifera Indica Seed Butter- The official name for Mango butter. You can see I put "Mango" in parentheses to clarify. It brings to the table antioxidant, anti fungal, and anti- inflammatory properties and it is a drier feeling butter thanks to the wonderful polyphenol, tannis.

Hydrogenated Butyrospermum Parkii Butter- Whew, that is a mouthful. It is Shea butter. This is a wonderful butter that contains allatoin, an occlusive agent. Basically it forms forms a barrier on the skin to lock in the lovely moisturizing properties of our bar. It also contains a nice amount of vitamin E.

Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil- The common name is Abyssinian Oil. It is high in erucic acid making it great for re-hydrating and protecting dry skin. You can see why I love it in the lotion bar.

Minmamthes Alba Seed Oil- This is one version of Meadowfoam oil. Oils are extracted from different parts of plants or seeds hence the variations. This oil is quickly absorbed and has UV protection properties which is why it is common in sunblocks. NOTE:The lotion bar is not meant to be used as sunscreen. I do not mess around with that subject as it is a tricky thing to make and should be left to the pros in that field. Protecting yourself from skin cancer is not something to mess around with!

Isopropyl Myristate (IPM)- This is an ester made from the reaction of isopropanol with myristic acid (vegetable source). I have included this to reduce the greasiness of the butters and oils to produce a more "velvety" feel. Why? Well greasy feeling hands is a no go for a nice lotion bar. Kind of defeats the purpose of our motto: To create products that work as they should and do it in a beautiful way. Greasy is not a beautiful feeling in my opinion
